Hey Dave,

It's another $99/year, but I've heard good things about ProCare:

http://www.apple.com/retail/procare/

Also, I've had good luck with my Macs overall, but when I've had problems I've found it helps to work thru the RamShop at UNC. They're good at running interference for you.

If your goal is to convince us to buy Apple care, this post isn\'t doing it, Dave!

You\'ve just convinced me that I was totally right not to buy the extended protection for the MacBook Pro that I just ordered for work.

Well, looks like I'm screwed. The Apple Store currently has my Mini, thanks to my iTunes debacle.

I guess it's back to the R.H. Fedora Core 1 machine for the next 7 months they'll have the Mini hostage. I guess that's not too bad; I mean, I think the Fedora box has like 112K of RAM and 5M of hard drive space. I'm sure I can get GNU-something-er-other to work.

Hey! at least I can use these nifty PCs here at work. I'm typing this via Lynx through SSH from a work terminal. (btw, your Get Firefox script thinks Lynx is IE)

Woot!

Well, not exactly -- I still think they are the best machines available (and the easiest to use overall), but it is their service department which is so disappointing. I still wholeheartedly endorse their products and think you should get yourself a MacBook for college (AND the AppleCare Protection Plan for the machine), but let us all pray that you don't get a lemon. If so, be prepared to engage in psychological warfare with Apple to get your problem resolved. I look forward to the day when I no longer have to give this caveat to prospective computer buyers.

So... I guess I'm *not* buying a MacBook, afterall? (I was planning on paying for the AppleCare, anyway...) But, if I'm screwed either way, perhaps I should pay half as much for an inferior computer and save my money for more important things... like food.

You think it is any better in any other country? Tell me some more lies... ;)

And actually to defend Linux a little bit, you spend 8 hours repairing something, not installing something. Their installers are actually quite speedy. Cheers!

....*....?

Well... I was about to say a few things, but then realized none of them were quite right. Basically, we're screwed in this country. The companies -- all of them -- just want our money. What's the alternative here? People choose whichever platform best suits their tolerance for whatever kind of shit the manufacturers dish outl. PCs suck outright, but cater to the lowest common denominator and give the impression that M$ is doing it's best for them ... Linux is a garbled mess of "oh my god! where the fuck am I? and what just happened? and what do you mean I have to spend another 8 hours installing something?" ... and Apple is supposed to be the best, but obviously isn't. Knock on formica, I haven't had any really crazy issues so far. They are asses, though. But so is everybody: "Here's your shoddily designed product. Give me money now. And fuck you very much!" I'd say sue them, but we all know that money talks there too... Whaddya gonna do.
